Global Geology and Topography
ArcIMS + GoogleMaps
I have been spurred on by Brad's work....
We are developing a portal for global geochemical data (http://www.earthchem.org). One of our map interfaces will be done with GoogleMaps + our cached ArcIMS implementation.
Check it out here:
http://geoportal.kgs.ku.edu/googlemaps/earthchem_cache.html
There is soooo much more to a map than just air photos and street maps!
Cheers,
Jeremy

Re: Global Geology and Topography
So where are all the push pins? I thought push pins were the whole purpose of Google Maps.

Re: Global Geology and Topography
You are evil...
If you wanted to put pushpins on the map you could. We are working within the GoogleMaps API. We have more than 100,000 samples to plot for this database. I wonder what the pushpin performance would be...
All kidding aside, I do like the seamless panning, the cached images, and the nice looking maps and imagery that Google is providing.

Re: Global Geology and Topography
Really great job, well done.
What are the legal issues/restrictions using the ArcMIS data on the web like this? Does the ArcIMS data require a special license or is it freely available to display in this manner?
Just curious! Thanks,
Paul.

Jeremey,
Have you guys had any luck converting your Tile/Cache system over to version 2 yet?

Re: Global Geology and Topography
Hi Paul. ArcIMS is not a data provider, it is software for publishing maps and data on the web. You can find more information about it here: http://www.esri.com/arcims
A large number of major metropolitan areas publish their own maps and data on the web via ArcIMS or standards based Web Map Services (WMS). You can find some of them on Mapdex. http://www.mapdex.org
Thanks!

Re: Global Geology and Topography
Hi Brad,
I have a version of GoogleMaps version 2 running with my cached map service idea here: http://geoportal.kgs.ku.edu/googlemaps2/earthchem_cachev2.html
I will post the code behind it in the coming days. If you view the source of the html page and the javascript you should get the idea. It is quite a bit different than how we are implementing it in version 1 GoogleMaps. It is cleaner in version 2. Thanks to John Deck for reworking the overlay code for WMS services to work with Gooogle Maps version2.
