Super Swanky Swiper (SSS)
or something like that...
Hi All,
A while back I blogged about mining historical imagery from the Mapdex database. Basically there is a lot of time based imagery available to the user. With this historical imagery you can see how a river meanders or how a city changes through time. It is pretty neat. (This is a much less disturbing example than the one that Frank from VerySpatial blogged about today).
Well around that time Keith, Asif, Ken, and Amber from our group (man am I going to miss working with them...) thought it would be neat to be able to visualize images through time. Building on the idea behind ESRI's swipe tool, they built a flash application that allows multiple images to be blended and swiped. I can't really explain it. How about a couple of visuals....

You can also create a faded movie for any area. Check out the animation here.
This application is built to work with any ArcIMS service (as long as all the layers are in the same projection).
It takes in a configuration file that contains which server, service, and layers should be viewed.
Once launched you zoom to the area of the map you want to be able to compare and then hit the "Start Swiping" button.
Here are some examples...
Fond-Du-Lac county, Wisconsin ( http://www.co.fond-du-lac.wi.us/ )
http://neutrino.kgs.ku.edu/swiper/swipeParent.cfm?configFile=http://geoportal.kgs.ku.edu/ags/infra.xml
Ogrady park in Washington (from PRISM Spatial Data Servers at the University of Washington)
http://neutrino.kgs.ku.edu/swiper/swipeParent.cfm?configFile=http://geoportal.kgs.ku.edu/ags/ogrady.xml
Kansas orthos
http://neutrino.kgs.ku.edu/swiper/swipeParent.cfm?configFile=http://neutrino.kgs.ku.edu/agstest/swiper2.xml
Build your own or discover a new series here. It has a few bugs...Let Keith know if it doesn't work for you.
Cheers,
Jeremy
